Breaking news: Church of England rejects women bishops
November 20, 2012
Despite an overwhelming vote in favour of women bishops (including the required two thirds majority among the bishops and the clergy by a substantial margin), the General Synods fails to pass the motion, it not reaching the necessary two thirds majority among "the laity."
The bile is already swilling around, and the judgement is being made that the church is showing itself grossly out of touch with society. It sounds like the response to one of those US elections where the President with the smallest proportion of the popular vote is returned. Who knows what the future holds? Doubtless it will disappoint the individual who is reported as mailing, "There were women apostles in the bible [which one?] - why can there not be women bishops now?"
For now, a stick has been thrown into that particular flood. Doubtless those whose conscience allows them to remain within the Anglican communion will be greatly relieved for the time being.
