Bruckner does it for me!
September 4, 2006
These have been some of the most frustrating two weeks in a while! God knew, of course, what he was doing and that I needed it.
I refer to the loss of my laptop! A call from (what sounded like) an Italian-New York detective last week suggesting that I should search for it on Ebay had me (in the end) laughing out loud. New York's finest! In a moment of frustration, in the midst of re-loading programs to my new laptop, looking in vain at "My Files" (noticing three months of what could only be described as "virtual files" -- they weren't there!) I turned to listen to a live performance of Bruckner's seventh symphony played by the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Sir Simon Rattle -- from the Royal Albert Hall in London, where I just "happened" to have been a few weeks previous.
If "the smell of bonfire, the sound of wild ducks flying overhead, the title of the The Well at the World's End, the opening lines of Kubla Khan, the morning cobwebs in late summer, the noise of falling waves" brought out for C. S. Lewis a sense that only in the Creator's love in Christ can true fulfilment be found (in his Pilgrim's Regress -- somewhere!), then for me, it is Bruckner's seventh. It is "like building a cathedral," Sir Simon suggested.
Sublime!
Try it out.
