On Monday evening at
5:15, the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge (along with the
Beatitudes Society and the One Campaign) will co-sponsor “In the Name
of Love: A Community U2charist,” a communion service that replaces
standard starched-collar hymns with arena rock. Those attending will be
encouraged to sing along as U2’s music is piped in over the
loudspeakers and the lyrics are projected on to a large screen.
There also will be prayers based on U2 songs, a chant based on the groove from “Mysterious Ways,” and dancing. Lots of dancing.
The organizers of Monday’s free U2charist, the Rev. Stephanie Spellers, the Rev. Devin McLachlan and EDS student Chris Wendell, don’t see anything radical about the marriage of rock and religion. . . . [more here]
