Try It, Carl, You'll Like It
October 4, 2007
Now, Carl, you don't have to take the Edwardian (as in Longshanks) stance towards all non-English cultural expressions. Your point about the commercialization of football is well taken (which is why the true American game is now seen only at the college level). But to disparage the quality of major league baseball -- in October! -- does no credit to your obscurantist English highbrowism. The intensity of athletic skill and artistry, the intensity of individual performance under pressure, of the baseball playoffs is unexcelled. Try it, Carl, you'll like it. And don't let your local Yankees fans turn you off to baseball. They are, after all, the Edwardians of American sports.
