Important New Books on Southern Seminary

Our friends at Southern Seminary are set for a bumper summer relative to publishing.  First, there is the new biography by Tom Nettles of founding president, James Petigru Boyce.  Then there are two collections of early Southern Baptist writings from Boyce, Basil Manly Sr., and Basil Manly Jr.   The Manly volume is in part the work of my old pal Michael Haykin -- which almost makes me want to rethink my view on the advisability of soul patches for the over 25s, but not quite.   Finally, and, from my perspective, most eagerly anticipated, there is Gregory Wills' history of Southern Seminary.   Professor Wills is interviewed here on his new book.  Of particular interest are his comments on the importance of Southern in the maintenance of orthodoxy within the SBC, the speed at which the institution went liberal after World War II, and the parasitic nature of liberalism which is always happy to live off an orthodox consituency while yet despising all that the said constituency represents and holds dear.
