The Host with the Most in the Post
June 9, 2009
The indefatigable Mrs Peel, glamorous defender of the Reformed faith, has brought the following story to my attention: a church that allows mail order communion (in batches of up to 500. I admit defeat: this is beyond satire. Check it out for yourself here. The only problem with the admirable inclusiveness of the plan is that (a) the wine seems to be missing, representing an apparent return to the medieval practice of withholding the cup from the laity; and (b) even if it as added at some point, Pennsylvania's draconian alcohol legislation (forbidding, among other things, the mailing of alcohol across state borders) will prevent the Trueman household from being able to commune.
It is all the brilliant idea of the Open Episcopal Church (for myself, I was not aware of any other kind) which bills itself as `the little church with the big heart' -- and, presumably, the large credit account with the Royal Mail.
Still. it's not all bad news: the Buddhist standing for election for bishop in Michigan looks set for defeat, at least according to Ecumenical News International. Plenty to meditate on there, I dare say.
