Psalms Project
March 5, 2009
At Union University they are sponsoring lectures throughout the year on the Psalms. The first lecture was by John Witvliet, director of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship
and professor of music and worship at Calvin College and Calvin
Theological Seminary.
Dr. Witvliet's engaging talk builds up Ambrose's metaphor that the Psalter is the "gymnasium for the soul." It forms and trains us in how to think and feel and talk. Just as parents must teach their children to respond with "thank you," please," "excuse me," the Psalms serve as language school for us, teaching us the same.
Other lectures thus far include:
Craig Blaising, The Psalms and Early Christian Worship
Ray Ortlund, Praying the Psalms (Psalm 1)
