Preach the Word
A beautiful festschrift for R. Kent Hughes has just been released by Crossway Books. The full title reads: Preach the Word: Essays on Expository Preaching: In Honor of R. Kent Hughes. The editors are Leland Ryken (truth in advertising: Leland is my father) and Todd Wilson.
For those who may not know, Kent Hughes served for nearly thirty years as Senior Minister of College Church in Wheaton. He is the author of the bestselling Disciplines of a Godly Man and many commentaries in the Preach the Word series he edits for Crossway. Incidentally, his Liberating Ministry from the Success Syndrome is one of the very best books I have read on the spirituality of pastoral ministry.
The festchrift features essays from D. A. Carson, J. I. Packer, Phillip Jensen, Duane Litfin, John MacArthur, Bruce Winter, and other friends who have appreciated Kent's ministry through the years. All of the essays relate to the task of preaching in some way -- specifically, expository preaching -- giving the book a greater unity than one sometimes sees in collections of essays.
