MDB 73: 1 Tim 3

Sean Lucas
Perhaps the main reason that Paul writes this letter to Timothy is so that "you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God" (3:15). The church exists as "a pillar and buttress of truth"; it confesses "the mystery of godliness" (3:16); and it serves others with the Gospel of Jesus.

In order for such service to occur, God established two offices: elder and deacon. Those who "aspire" to such offices desire "noble tasks," ones in which they gain for themselves "a good standing" as well as "great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus" (3:1, 13).

And yet, how often we fail to honor those who are called to thse offices within the church! How often we fail to see them as the way God guides and directs the church, insures that the church behaves in accordance with the Gospel, enables the church to confess the Gospel in purity and hope!

Would you commit to remember your leaders and "consider the outcome of their way of life" to "imitate their faith" (Hebrews 13:7)? Would you agree before God to "obey your leaders and submit to them" knowing that "they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account" (Hebrews 13:17)? Would you purpose today to pray for your church leaders, for the elders and deacons who serve your particular congregation that they might act honorably for the Gospel's sake (Hebrews 13:18)?

God has granted these men to you and the entire church of God in order to establish your faith and to make sure you arrive safely to the Celestial City. Thank God for them!
